Adam stood on the edge of the Sparkling Bay, the golden sand squishing between his toes. He was only two years old, but today he felt like a giant ready for a big, important job. His sun-bleached blonde hair looked like silk in the breeze, and his cornflower-blue eyes were wide with wonder. In his hand, he clutched his very best friend: a sturdy, yellow toy excavator. On his feet were his magical sneakers. Do you know what they do? With every step, they go 'flash-flash, wink-wink' with bright, white lights.

Suddenly, the water began to ripple. A tiny, round fish with big watery eyes popped his head out of the waves. This was Pip the Pufferfish. 'Adam!' Pip squeaked, 'We need help! The Coral Pebble School playground is covered in heavy, grey stones. We can’t play, we can’t dance, and we certainly can’t zoom-zoom!' Adam looked at his excavator. He looked at his flashing shoes. He nodded his head firmly. It was time for an underwater adventure.

With a soft 'Bloop!'—just like a pebble falling into a bucket—Adam found himself stepping right into the water. But wait! He didn’t sink like a stone. He floated like a happy bubble! Under the water, the world was a magical blue room. His sneakers were even brighter now, acting like two powerful headlights. 'Flash-flash!' they went, lighting up the wavy seaweed and the shy crabs. He held his yellow excavator tight. 'Vroom, vroom,' he whispered, and the toy’s wheels turned with a gentle 'swish-swish' in the current.

When they reached the playground, Adam saw the problem. It was a mess! Big, grumpy-looking grey stones were everywhere. Pip the Pufferfish and a crew of tiny Neon Tetras were trying to push them, but the stones wouldn't budge. 'Don't worry,' Adam said, his voice sounding like soft bubbles. 'I have the big bucket!' He moved his excavator through the water. It was different than digging in the sandbox. The water made everything slow and bouncy. 'Clack-clack-clack!' went the excavator arm as it stretched out.

Adam had to be very careful. If he moved too fast, he would spin around in a circle! He learned a special rhythm. 'Lift-lift-slide,' he hummed. 'Lift-lift-dump!' He scooped up a heavy stone. 'Ugh!' he grunted, then 'Šup!'—into the scrap pile it went. The fish cheered, blowing tiny bubble-whistles that sounded like 'Peet-peet!' The seaweed tried to tickle Adam’s knees, making him giggle 'Tee-hee-hee!', but he stayed focused on the work. He was the captain of the construction site, after all.

There was one last stone left—a giant, stubborn boulder. Adam took a deep breath. His sneakers flashed extra bright: 'FLASH! FLASH!' He lined up his excavator, pushed his feet into the sandy floor, and gave a mighty 'Rrrr-roar!' with his toy machine. The boulder rolled over with a 'Thump-thud-bubble,' and everyone gasped. Underneath the stone was a beautiful mosaic of colorful shells! The playground was beautiful again. The fish danced a wiggly-jiggly dance around Adam’s overalls, and Grandmother Sea Turtle came by to give him a slow, happy high-five with her flipper.

'Thank you, Adam,' the fish sang in a chorus of bubbles. Adam felt a warm, fuzzy feeling in his heart, bigger than any truck or plane. He realized that being kind and helping his friends was the best fuel in the whole world. The sun began to set, turning the water from bright blue to a sleepy purple. His light-up shoes guided him back to the shore, 'flash-flash, flash-flash,' slower and slower.

He tumbled onto the dry sand, his curls salty and his heart full. He was back in his own world, but he still had a tiny seashell tucked in his pocket. With a sleepy 'Yawn,' he crawled into his bed. 'Vroom,' he whispered one last time as his eyes drifted shut. He was a small boy with a big machine, and tonight, he had saved the day. And that’s how it all turned out just right.
