Once upon a time, in a forest where the moss felt like velvet and the sunlight tasted like honey, lived a bear named Bramble. Now, Bramble wasn’t just any bear. He was a sturdy, chocolate-colored mountain of fur with amber eyes that twinkled like lanterns. But his most important feature—at least, according to Bramble—was his scarf. It was a massive, chunky-knit masterpiece of forest green and mustard yellow, wrapped twice around his thick neck with tassels that danced whenever he took a step.

One crisp Tuesday morning, Bramble sat on a stump near the Whispering Hazel Thicket. He was watching his friends, Squeak the squirrel and Pip the rabbit, heading to Forest School. Squeak was panting so hard his tail looked like a limp noodle, and Pip was dragging his long ears in the dirt. 'Oh, Bramble!' Squeak wheezed, stopping to catch his breath. 'The schoolhouse is all the way over the hill! By the time we get there, we’re too tired to learn our ABCs—we only want to learn our ZZZs!'

Bramble’s heart gave a little tug under his warm scarf. He hated seeing his tiny friends so exhausted. He thought and he thought, tapping his large, black button nose with a claw. 'What if,' Bramble whispered, his voice like the low rumble of a distant cello, 'you didn't have to walk at all? What if you could... fly?' Squeak and Pip looked at each other and then at the sky. They didn't have wings, and they certainly didn't have a plane. But they had Bramble, and Bramble had a very big idea.

Bramble searched the thicket for the springiest, most zig-zaggity hazelnut branches he could find. He pulled out his golden acorn whistle—Pheeeet!—to signal to the busy ants to move their construction site out of the way. Then, he got to work. He used his strong paws to bend the branches back, securing them with vines. But he needed something stretchy, something soft yet strong, to hold the seat. He looked at his beloved scarf. With a gentle sigh, he untwined it from his neck and looped it between the branches. It was the perfect slingshot.

'Success!' Bramble cheered. 'Now for a test!' He placed a heavy pinecone into the green woolly seat. He pulled back... back... back... and Whoosh! The pinecone soared into the air like a rocket made of scales. It went up, up, and then—Thwack!—it hit a very surprised crow in a nearby pine tree. 'Oops,' Bramble muttered, his ears twitching in embarrassment. 'A bit too much oomph, I think.'

He realized that a bear-sized launch was a bit too much for a squirrel-sized student. More importantly, he realized that flying was only half the fun—the landing was the tricky part. He couldn't just have his friends go Splat! at the school gates. So, Bramble hurried back to his cave and emerged with a wobbling, towering mountain of pillows. These weren't just any pillows; they were his grandmother's old goose-down cushions, as soft as marshmallows and as light as a summer cloud.

He lugged the pillows to the base of the Hollow Oak Schoolhouse and piled them high. Fluff, pat, fluff! Soon, there was a landing zone so bouncy that even a falling star would have enjoyed a nap on it. Bramble headed back to the catapult, his amber eyes shining with pride. 'Alright, Squeak! Are you ready for the Puf-Tastic Leaf-Launcher?' Squeak looked at the long scarf-sling and then at the distant hill. 'Ready!' he squeaked, though his whiskers trembled just a tiny bit.

Bramble carefully placed Squeak into the mustard-yellow fold of the scarf. 'Hold your breath, tuck your tail, and remember to giggle!' Bramble commanded playfully. He pulled the scarf back with a rhythmic Creeeeak... and then he let go. Boing! Squeak shot through the air. He wasn't a worried squirrel anymore; he was a furry blur of joy. He sailed over the bushes, over the stream, and right over the heads of the walking ants.

Puf! Squeak landed right in the center of the pillow mountain. A second later, his head popped out from the feathers, a giant grin on his face. 'Again! Can I do it again?' he shouted. Pip the Rabbit went next—Boing!... Whizz!... Puf! He landed with his long ears flopping happily. The Forest School had never seen anything like it. Soon, a line of little animals had formed, all waiting for their turn to ride the Bramble Express.

Just then, the school bell rang—a hollow Dong, Dong!—and Professor Hoot the Owl stepped out onto the porch. He adjusted his spectacles and looked at the pile of pillows, then at the distant bear waving his scarf. 'Well, well,' the Professor hooted. 'It seems Mr. Bramble has invented a way to arrive at school not just on time, but with a heart full of excitement! Very clever engineering, indeed.'

Bramble watched from the hill as his friends disappeared inside the schoolhouse, their energy high and their smiles wide. He felt a cool breeze on his neck, which was now missing its cozy scarf, but his chest felt warmer than ever. He realized he didn't need the wool to stay cozy as long as he was busy helping others.

As the sun climbed higher, Bramble began to walk home with a happy, heavy-footed lumber. He would get his scarf back at the end of the day, but for now, it was a bridge—or rather, a spring—between his heart and his friends. And that’s how the first day of the Leaf-Launcher turned out just right. Bum, puf, and a very happy bear.
