Once upon a time, in the middle of the Sun-Dapple Meadow, lived a dragon named Daisy. Now, when you think of a dragon, do you think of a big, scary beast with sharp teeth? Well, Daisy was different. She was the color of a fresh lime, with scales that sparkled like morning dew, and the only thing she wanted to do was make friends.
While the big dragons up on the mountain were practicing their 'Roar-and-Scare,' Daisy was in her cave practicing her 'Hello-and-Smile.' But Daisy had a little problem. Every time she got excited and tried to say hi, a tiny 'Whoosh!' of hot smoke would pop out of her nose. One morning, she tried to wave to a passing butterfly, but—Oh no!—a little 'Puff!' of fire accidentally singed the petals of a nearby flower. Daisy felt very sad. 'What if my heat is just too much?' she whispered. 'What if I’m too scary for the meadow?'
You see, today was a very big day. A group of new neighbors was moving in! There was Barnaby the Bunny, the shy Hazelnut Hedgehogs, and a very fast squirrel named Pip. Daisy watched from behind a big oak tree. She wanted to welcome them so badly, but she was afraid her fire would frighten them away. Then, her tummy gave a little rumble, and her eyes landed on a giant pile of blueberries and golden oats she had gathered. Sizzle-snap! An idea began to spark in her heart.
Daisy put on her favorite blue polka-dot apron. Can you imagine a dragon in an apron? She tied it tight and got to work. She mashed the berries—splat, squish, squash! She mixed in the oats—swish, swoosh, swirl! Soon, she had dozens of round, plump cookie dough balls laid out on a flat, silver stone. Now came the tricky part. Daisy took a deep breath. She didn't roar. She didn't shout. She just closed her eyes and gave a very gentle, very warm 'Puff-puff-mmm!'
Ssss-sizzle! The meadow began to smell like sweet berries and toasted honey. It was the most wonderful smell in the whole wide world! Over the hill came Barnaby the Bunny, twitching his pink nose. Behind him waddled the Hazelnut Hedgehogs, and 'Zip!' came Pip the Squirrel. They followed the yummy scent right to Daisy’s cave.
Daisy was nervous, but she held out a tray of warm, golden cookies. 'Would you... would you like one?' she asked softly. Barnaby took a bite. Crunch! 'These are the best cookies I've ever tasted!' he squeaked. Soon, all the neighbors were munching and laughing together in the sun. Daisy’s heart felt even warmer than her breath! She realized that her fire wasn't for scaring anyone at all. It was a special gift for making things cozy.
And that’s how it all turned out just right. Daisy the Dragon became the meadow’s favorite baker, proving that when you use your sparkle for kindness, everyone wants to be your friend. And do you know what? They lived happily—and very full of cookies—ever after.
