Deep, deep inside a castle of gray stone and sun-bright windows lived little Leo. Leo was small, with hands that loved to touch and eyes that loved to see. One day, tucked behind a velvet curtain, Leo found something special. It was a suit of silver armor, just his size. Clink! Clank! Click! Leo stepped inside the metal suit. He looked in the mirror and felt very big. He felt very strong. He felt like the bravest knight in all of history.
'Clang! Clang! Clang!' went Leo’s boots as he marched toward the Whispering Woods. He wanted to find a dragon! He wanted to show everyone his loud, shiny power. But the forest was very quiet, and Leo was very noisy. Every time his heavy metal feet went 'Thump-Thump!', the squirrels would scramble up the trees. 'Zip!' went the bunnies into their burrows. Even the leaves seemed to shiver when Leo’s armor went 'Crunch!' on the moss.
Oh no! Do you see what Leo did? His big metal boot accidentally squashed a tiny beetle’s house made of green moss. 'Squish...' went the moss. Leo stopped. He felt a little sad. Then, he heard a tiny sound. 'Peep... peep!' A small sparrow was stuck in a prickly bramble. Leo tried to help, but his big silver gloves were too clumsy. 'Clatter-cluck!' went the metal. He couldn't reach the bird without poking the poor thing. Leo realized that to be a hero, he didn't need to be loud or hard. He needed to be soft.
Leo took a deep breath. Slow and steady, he slipped off his heavy metal gauntlets. 'Plop, plop' they fell on the grass. Then he took off his noisy boots. 'Shhh,' said the wind. With his own bare, gentle fingers, Leo reached into the thorns. Gently, so gently, he unhooked the bird’s wing. 'Whoosh!' The sparrow was free! It circled Leo’s head with a happy song.
Leo didn't need the 'Clink-Clank' anymore. He sat on the soft grass, and soon, the tiny beetle crawled back out to say hello. The forest friends brought Leo bits of yellow daisies and wove them into a circle. They placed a flower crown on his head. Leo learned that the bravest knights in history aren't the ones who make the most noise, but the ones who have the softest touch and the kindest hearts. And that’s how it all turned out just right.
