Once upon a time, in a meadow where the grass grew tall and the sun felt like a warm hug, lived a tiny mouse named Mila. Mila was very small, but she had very, very big ears.
Can you wiggle your ears like Mila? Her ears went twitch-twitch-twitch at every little sound!
Mila lived in a snuggly house under a giant dandelion. One afternoon, while the sky was blue and the air was soft, Mila heard something new. It wasn’t a bird, and it wasn’t a bug. It was a gentle, magical whistle.
“Fiu-fiu! Fiu-fiu!”
What could it be? Mila blinked her bright eyes. She put one paw in front of the other—pitter-patter, pitter-patter—and set off into the Emerald Meadow to find the secret song.
The grass was so high that it looked like giant green skyscrapers stretching up to the clouds. Mila felt very small. Suddenly, a big gust of wind blew past.
“Shhh-shhh! Shhh-shhh!” went the leaves.
Oh dear! The wind was so loud that Mila couldn't hear the music anymore. She felt a little bit lost. Do you know what Mila did? She didn't cry. She sat very still, closed her eyes, and listened with her heart.
“Bzzz-wuzz!” A fuzzy Bumblebee tumbled out of a clover flower. He was very sleepy.
“Excuse me, Mr. Bee,” Mila whispered. “Where did the ‘Fiu-fiu’ go?”
The Bumblebee stretched his wings. “Just follow your nose and keep your ears open, little one. The music is growing right out of the ground!”
Mila thanked the bee and kept going. She climbed over a mossy pebble—up and over! She crawled under a spider’s bridge made of shiny, silver silk—creep, creep, creep.
And then, she found it!
In a secret circle, a group of blue Harebells and bright Snapdragons were dancing. As the wind blew, the flowers swayed back and forth.
“Sway-sway! Sway-sway!”
Their petals chimed like tiny silver bells, and their stems made a soft humming sound. It was a meadow concert! Mila was so happy that her tail started to move.
“Tap-tap-tip! Tap-tap-tip!”
Mila used her long tail to drum on a dry leaf while the flowers sang their “Fiu-fiu” song. Everything felt peaceful and bright. Mila realized that if you are quiet and kind, the world always has a beautiful secret to show you.
When the sun started to tuck itself behind the hills, Mila began the long walk home. Pitter-patter, pitter-patter. She crawled back into her dandelion house, curled up in a ball, and hummed the flower song until she fell fast asleep.
And that’s how it all turned out just right.
