Deep down in the sparkly, bubbly kingdom of Coral Cove lived a mermaid named Mina. She had a tail the color of morning sunlightâshimmer-shimmer-shimmerâand a laugh that sounded like tiny silver bells ringing underwater. But even in a place this beautiful, do you think everyone was happy? Oh no! Some days, the sea creatures were quite grumpy. Barnaby the Crab would huff about the prickly sand, and Finny the Fish would grumble that his fins felt too floppy.
One morning, a 'Grumble-Cloud' of gray silt drifted into the cove. Everything looked a bit dusty and felt a bit sad. 'Bloop-bloop!' went the bubbles, but they weren't jumpy bubbles; they were slow, sleepy ones. Barnaby had even lost his favorite pebble. 'Itâs a gray day,' he sighed, clicking his claws. 'A very gray, grumpy day.'
Mina smiled and swam a graceful loop-the-loop. 'Wait!' she called. 'I have a secret. Come with me to the Great Glowing Oyster.' She led her friends to a magnificent shell that sat on a bed of soft, green moss. Inside lay a tiny, dull grain of sand. It didn't look like much at all. 'To make a Peaceful Pearl,' Mina whispered, 'we must feed it with our glimmers. A glimmer is just one little thing you are thankful for.'
She looked at the child listening to this story. Can you think of one little thing that makes you happy? Maybe a warm hug or a yummy snack?
Finny the Fish went first. 'Iâm thankful for... the way the water tickles my scales when I swim fast!' Swish-swish! Suddenly, that little grain of sand gave a tiny golden blink. Then it was Barnabyâs turn. He thought and he thought. 'Iâm thankful for this soft moss,' he said, patting it with a claw. 'Itâs much nicer than the prickly sand.'
Pop! The grain of sand grew into a small, glowing bead. As the Wise Old Turtle and the Sleepy Starfish shared their joysâthe taste of salty snacks and the warmth of the sun-lit currentâthe light grew bigger and bigger. The Peaceful Pearl was pulsing now. Glow... glow... glow... like a tiny underwater heart.
The golden light from the Pearl began to push the gray Grumble-Cloud away. The silt didn't just vanish; it simply didn't matter anymore because the cove was filled with a warm, cozy light. The creatures felt calm from their heads down to their flippers.
'Look,' Mina said softly. 'The gray clouds might come back sometimes, but we have our Pearl to keep us warm.' From that day on, every evening when the ocean grew quiet and the stars began to peek through the surface of the water, the friends gathered at the Great Oyster. They each added one new spark of thanks, and the Peaceful Pearl grew brighter and brighter, keeping all of Coral Cove safe and happy in its gentle, golden hug. And do you know what? Thatâs how it all turned out just right.
