Have you ever looked out of your window at night to count the stars? You know how they blink at you like tiny, friendly eyes? Well, one Tuesday evening in the Sky Village, Ryu looked up and saw⊠nothing. No twinkles, no sparkles, not even a little glimmer. The sky was as dark as the bottom of a magicianâs hat.
Now, Ryu wasnât your average boy. He had cocoa-brown skin, a wild mane of electric cobalt blue hair that pulsed with light, and a silvery scar on his forehead that looked just like a tiny lightning bolt. If there was a mystery to solve, Ryu was the one to do it! He looked at his leather bracers, etched with swirling cloud patterns, and felt a tiny Spark! inside his chest. 'The stars didnât just go out,' he whispered, his amber eyes narrowing. 'Theyâve been moved.'
To find a star, you have to go upâway, way up. Ryu tapped his cloud-bracersâClink! Clink!âand suddenly, he felt light as a feather. He began to run, not on the ground, but right up an invisible staircase into the sky! His blue hair acted like a glowing lantern, cutting through the thick, inky dark. Can you imagine running on air? Every step felt like jumping on a giant, soft marshmallow. Whoosh!
As he climbed into the Great Cumulus Maze, Ryu spotted something strange. On the edge of a fluffy white cloud lay a tiny speck of silver. He picked it up. It was warm and felt like a fizzy candy. 'A starlight crumb!' he exclaimed. He was on the right track. But just as he turned a corner, a giant, grey shape blocked his path. It was Barnaby, the Grumbling Storm-Cloud.
'BOOM! CRACKLE! GO AWAY!' Barnaby roared, puffing out his chest and throwing tiny, harmless sparks. Ryu didnât run. He knew Barnaby was just a bit cranky. 'Pardon me, Barnaby,' Ryu said politely, 'but have you seen anyone carrying a lot of noise and light?' Barnaby let out a long, foggy sigh. 'That big fellow, Grog. He went that way, clutching a glass jar and complaining about his ears. He was very⊠Hmph!⊠loud about it.'
Following the trail of crumbs, Ryu reached the Snoozing Peak. And there he saw him: Grog. Grog was a giant so big that his knees looked like hills. He was sitting on a peak, hugging a massive glass jar. Inside the jar, hundreds of stars were crashing against the glass, making a sound like a thousand tiny silver bells. Tink-a-link! Clink-clink! It was beautiful, but very, very noisy.
'Oh, please be quiet!' Grog groaned, his voice sounding like a mountain moving. He covered his ears with his huge hands. 'I just want a nap, but you little twinklers won't stop singing!' Ryu realized then that Grog wasn't a mean giant; he was just a very, very sleepy one. The stars loved to sing, and Grog stayed up all day, so he couldn't sleep with all that 'Twinkle, Twinkle' going on.
Ryu stepped forward, his blue hair glowing soft and calm. 'Excuse me, Mr. Grog?' The giant jumped, nearly dropping the jar. 'Iâm Ryu. I can help you sleep, and help the stars go home.' Grog looked at the small boy with the glowing hair. 'You can? But theyâre so loud! Every time I close my eyes, itâs Ding! Dong! Shimmer!'
Ryu smiled and touched his sapphire pendant. He used his magic to weave together wisps of passing clouds and a few strands of moonlight. He worked his fingers fastâZip! Zap! Zoom!âuntil he had created a pair of massive, fluffy 'Cloud-Mufflers.' They looked like big, soft earmuffs made of the quietest dreams.
'Try these,' Ryu said. Grog placed the cloud-mufflers over his ears. A look of pure peace spread across his giant face. 'It's⊠it's silent,' Grog whispered. 'I canât hear a single twinkle!' Grog was so happy he handed the jar to Ryu. With a brave breath, Ryu twisted the lid. POP!
Whoosh! The stars shot out like a fountain of liquid diamonds! They climbed higher and higher, zooming back to their favorite spots in the velvet sky. The village below began to glow again as the light returned. Ryu watched them go, his heart feeling as bright as his hair. Grog was already fast asleep, snoring with a sound like a distant, happy lawnmower.
Ryu tumbled back down the cloud-stairs, landing lightly on his feet in the village square. The mystery was solved, the giant was snoring, and the sky was sparkly once more. And thatâs how Ryu learned that sometimes, a little bit of thinking and a lot of kindness can fix even the biggest problems in the world. Goodnight, stars. Goodnight, Ryu.
