The school gym hummed with the sound of snapping tape and excited chatter. Ema stood on her tiptoes, adjusting the cardboard tube of their Star-Mapper 3000, her mismatched laces brushing the floor. Beside her, Luna the owl checked their star charts through her gold-rimmed glasses. Luna liked everything precise. She adjusted her wizard’s hat and pointed a wing at the big drawing of the solar system, ready for the science fair to begin.
Luna carefully placed a label under the red planet. It said Mars. But when she turned to pick up the tape, the paper shimmered. Suddenly, the label didn't say Mars anymore. It said Mars-mallows. Luna blinked, her amber eyes wide. She swapped it for a fresh one, but as soon as she looked away, the word changed to Saturn-day Brunch. 'Ema,' Luna hooted softly, 'the planets are acting very silly today.'
Ema giggled, but then she saw the label for the Sun change into a drawing of a smiling lemon that said Sunny Side Up. They checked the Neptune sign, but it had turned into Neptune-tune. Luna fluffed her white feathers in frustration. Who was messing with their hard work? They peeked under the table and behind the heavy velvet curtains of the gym stage. Something was glowing back there, and it was definitely giggling.
A small, translucent figure floated out, holding a crayon that shimmered like moonlight. It was a little ghost named Glimmer. Glimmer wasn't trying to be mean; she just had a pocket full of jokes and no one to tell them to. 'I just wanted to make the stars sparkle with laughs,' Glimmer whispered, her glow fading as she looked at her feet. Luna frowned at the messy labels, but Ema’s hazel eyes lit up.
Luna looked at the ruined charts, but Ema reached out and patted Glimmer’s glowing hand. 'These jokes are actually very funny,' Ema said, her mustard-yellow sweater crinkling as she smiled. 'Look, the other kids are already laughing!' It was true. A crowd was gathering, pointing at the Mars-mallows and grinning. Ema suggested they change their plan. Instead of just a map, they could build a Galaxy of Giggles together.
Luna realized that science could be serious and silly at the same time. She used her precise knowledge to place the stars, while Glimmer used her spectral crayon to add puns about the Milky Way being full of chocolate. Mr. Grumble, the judge with the big silver clipboard, walked over. He stared at the glowing jokes, his mustache twitching. Then, he let out a booming laugh and pinned a bright ribbon to their booth.
The Star-Mapper 3000 won the Most Creative award, but the best part was their new friend. As the gym grew quiet and the lights dimmed, Ema and Luna shared a celebratory high-five. Glimmer floated above them, drawing a glowing, smiling face on the final star-map. The three of them sat together in the soft light of the paper stars, feeling very proud of their big, funny universe. Everything was finally in the right place.
