Oto and Rex were playing hide-and-seek among the giant oaks in the park. Rex was counting, his big red sneakers planted firmly on the grass, when a tiny sneeze echoed from a hollow log. A-choo! Out tumbled a ball of golden fluff with a shiny silver collar. The puppy gave a happy yip and licked Oto’s trunk, making the little elephant giggle until his ears flopped. He is perfect, Oto whispered, hugging his stuffed elephant close.
The puppy was a whirlwind of energy. It zipped under Rex’s tail and zoomed between Oto’s blue-and-white striped legs. Suddenly, the puppy grabbed Rex’s thick white shoelace and pulled with all its might. Hey, those are my favorite sneakers, Rex laughed, hopping on one foot to keep his balance. Having a puppy was chaotic and very funny. But then, the puppy stopped. It looked toward the park gates, let out a tiny, lonely whimper, and sat still.
Rex scooped the puppy into his sweater pocket. He fits just right, Rex said, patting his striped chest. We should keep him forever. Oto looked at his own stuffed elephant and thought about how he would feel if his best friend were lost in a big park. A puppy is fun, but a home is for everyone, Oto said softly. They sat on a bench and talked about how much someone must be missing this little friend right now.
They decided to find the puppy’s home, starting at the big stone fountain. A runner named Dash was darting past, looking under every bench. Rex wanted to help, so he used his loudest dinosaur voice. Excuse me, have you lost a dog, he boomed. Dash was so startled he accidentally tumbled right into a prickly bush. The puppy wagged its tail and licked Dash’s hand to show they were friendly. Dash pointed toward the ice cream stand.
There is a sign over there, Dash called out, brushing leaves off his shorts. Oto and Rex hurried toward the ice cream stand, where a bright yellow poster was taped to a pole. Before they could read it, a blue butterfly fluttered past. The puppy went wild. It led them on a zig-zag chase through a bed of petunias. Rex’s big sneakers made it hard to turn, and he tripped, sending everyone tumbling into the soft dirt.
As they brushed themselves off, they saw a girl named Maya sitting by the swings, her face hidden in her hands. She was crying quietly. Rex felt a tug of sadness in his chest. He realized that keeping the puppy would be wrong because Maya’s heart was breaking. Oto stepped forward, his trunk gently offering the puppy to the girl. Is this your friend, Oto asked. Maya looked up, her eyes widening with hope as the puppy barked.
The puppy leaped from Oto’s grip and landed right in Maya’s arms. She hugged him so tight that the puppy’s tail became a golden blur of joy. Maya was so happy that she reached into her pocket and pulled out colorful candy wrappers. She twisted them into shiny ribbons and pinned them on the heroes. You are the Best Puppy Finders, she cheered. Oto and Rex felt a warm glow that was better than keeping the puppy.
As the sun began to set, painting the sky in shades of orange, the two friends walked home. Back in their cozy room, Rex kicked off his big sneakers and Oto cuddled his stuffed elephant. They watched the moon rise, feeling proud of their big decision. Their new friend was safe and sound at home. The two heroes fell fast asleep, dreaming of wagging tails and bright yellow posters. It was a very good day.
