Zoe is a little girl with hair as bright as the morning sun. Her hair looks like dandelion fluff—so soft and so white! She lives on a big farm where the grass smells like sweet hay and the sun gives the windows big, warm hugs. Every day, Zoe wears her favorite leather boots. They are scuffed at the toes because Zoe loves to jump, skip, and hop. But tonight, it is time for bed. Zoe goes to the front door to find her boots.
Oh no! Where are they? The rug is empty. The doorway is bare. Zoe’s boots are gone! Did they run away to join a parade? Did the wind blow them into the orchard? Zoe shakes her head. 'No,' she whispers. 'I will be a little detective.' She reaches into the pocket of her blue overalls and touches her yellow handkerchief. It is time for a hunt! Tip-tap, tip-tap go Zoe’s feet on the wooden floor. Can you walk softly like Zoe?
Zoe looks in the kitchen. She hears the floor go 'Click-clack!' but no boots. She looks behind the big, tall fridge. Nothing there but a shy dust bunny. 'Excuse me, Mr. Bunny,' Zoe says with a giggle. 'Have you seen my boots?' The dust bunny stays very quiet. Zoe follows a trail of tiny, soft paw-prints. They lead past the laundry basket. It smells like purple lavender and fresh air. Mmm, can you take a big sniff? Zoe peeks inside. 'Are you in here, boots?' But only soft towels answer with a fuzzy 'Shhh.'
Under the big oak table she crawls. Scritch-scratch! Zoe giggles as her braids tickle the chair legs. Suddenly, she hears a sound. A very small sound. 'Sniff-snuff... snore!' What could that be? Zoe follows the sound all the way to a sun-drenched corner of her bedroom. She peeks behind the long, white curtains.
And what do you think she sees? There is Barnaby, her fluffy puppy! He is curled in a little ball, his tail giving a tiny 'Thump-thump' in his sleep. And right under his chin are Zoe’s favorite boots. Barnaby isn't a thief; he just wanted a cozy pillow that smelled like his best friend Zoe.
Zoe smiles a big, warm smile. She doesn't wake him up. Instead, she finds a soft, fleecy blanket and gently swaps it for the boots. Now Barnaby has a cloud to sleep on, and Zoe has her boots back. She sets them neatly by her bed, tucks her yellow handkerchief under her pillow, and climbs into the covers. The mystery is solved, the puppy is happy, and Zoe is ready for big, golden dreams. And that’s how it all turned out just right.
